4 Tips for Choosing Your Engagement Session Outfit- Idaho Engagement Photographer

It’s engagement season and I have been super busy helping my couples for this year (and next) plan their engagement sessions! Getting the opportunity to get to know my couples better and get them comfortable in front of the camera is one of my favorite parts of the entire process. However, for a lot of my couples, this part stresses them out. I get a lot of my couples texting me photos of outfit ideas, asking questions about colors and what looks best on camera so I thought I would make a little guide to hopefully help make choosing your outfits a little easier!

  1. Wear What You’re Comfortable In

This is the first thing I tell everyone! You don’t have to go out and search for a new gown and high heels if that’s not what makes you feel good. A lot of my couples are jeans and t-shirts people and I’ve had couples go all out and buy brand new dresses and suits- it’s whatever makes you feel good about yourself! My goal is to always capture your personalities and interactions with one another and the more comfortable you feel, the easier it is to catch those sweet candid moments on camera.

2. Choose Colors That Complement One Another

Colors are what I get asked about most- it can be overwhelming but it’s actually quite simple. Choose colors that compliment your skin tone well (ex: if you’re super pale like me, maybe choose darker colors or jewel tones and stay away from pastels) and avoid bright neon colors at all costs. You also don’t want to be matchy-matchy with your partner- choose colors that complement each other well. One trick I like to use is to search color palettes on Pinterest and try to match your clothes to the colors on the color palette! I often tell couples to each pick a main color in a color palette (often a neutral and a brighter color) to build their outfits around.

3. Play With Pattens and Texture

Pattern can scare people (understandably) but I say embrace it! You don’t want to go crazy with a super wild pattern but throwing in pops of a fun pattern can be a lot of fun and add some interest to your photos. Same with texture! Choosing different textures can add movement and fun detail to your photos.

4. Keep Your Location in Mind

This seems obvious but it’s always surprising to me how many people don’t take this into consideration. Think of how the colors in your outfit will complement the colors of the scenery and how well your overall style will complement the scenery. If you’re doing your session in a forest maybe avoid green and stick with more neutral tones and ditch the Stilettos and wear a lower heel or even sandals. If you’re choosing the foothills maybe choose a color palette with a brighter color to pop against the neutral background. If you’re doing a snow session and you want to look like a snow queen find a sparkly dress to wear for a few photos but then switch to cozy sweaters and boots.
